Reston’s lakes are unique and there are very few other bodies of water around Northern VA with homes on them.

Of course there are some; Lake Barcroft, Lake Royal, Lake Montclair, etc.

But as far as the amount of homes that offer lake views, and type of homes that have a view, Reston is a great place to start your search.

Many of the communities in Reston also offer dock access for launching a boat.

Canoes, kayaks and electric powered boats are permitted on the lakes.

Electric boats will need a permit, but offer a really great way to enjoy some time on the water. Lake Anne even has canoes, kayaks and pedal boats for rent.

Reston has very diverse types of real estate with lake views, and lakefront. For an in depth guide on townhomes in Reston VA, including waterfront townhomes, see our guide.

The luxury single family homes usually have a contemporary style that Reston is known for many of these also have there own dock access.

So apply for that boating permit and break out the fishing poles (which is also allowed in the lakes). There is also an extensive number of townhomes, which you can see above in the currently for sale listings.

Reston’s History

There are also some condo communities that offer lake views, spread throughout reston. The most iconic being the concrete high rise condo building that overlooks the Lake Anne Village Center.

Every lake offers something a little different. There is one though that has a special place in many Restonian’s hearts, which is Lake Anne.

It was also given a special place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

There is also an overlay district in this area that protects the 1960s contemporary architecture.

The Village Center offers some of Reston’s best dining/views.

The Lake Anne Coffee House has been a part of Reston for 20 years and I believe should be given historic preservation also. If they did so for coffee shops, it would get my vote.

It also has some more traditional sit down restaurants. There is also a very nice walking trail that goes around a section of the lake.

The Reston Real Estate Market

Reston is a sought after area to purchase a home, for many reasons.

The metro stops built in the area have boosted the accessibility, and therefore the home values have increased over time.

There are also a very large number of technology companies that have moved their headquarters or offices into Northern Virginia, Reston and surrounding areas.

Amazon is the obvious one, but there are many others.

Reston sits right in the tech corridor that has sprung up in the area. This should mean that communities will continue to see good appreciation over a long enough period of time.

Reston has a healthy long term outlook.

Eventually, the time comes to sell your property. Waterfront properties are highly sought after, and the benefits of living on the water should be highlighted.

More Community Info

Not only is Reston Virginia one of the first planned residential communities in Virginia, it is also one of the most beautiful and artfully designed communities.

With centers and housing based around the numerous lakes, Reston makes waterfront homes in the middle of Fairfax County a reality.

Reston has five village centers and one main town center; Lake Anne was the first village center built, followed by Hunters Woods, Tall Oaks, South Lakes, and North Point.

There are several lakes in Reston. Lake Audubon being the largest. The second is Lake Thoreau.

As mentioned above, Lake Anne is known for its rich history, as the first homes in reston were the townhomes and detached homes in this area.

The other lakes include Lake Fairfax, and Lake Newport.

Reston’s lakes are man-made and were created for the purpose of providing storm water management for the community.

Although swimming is prohibited, fishing, boating, and picnicking lakeside are encouraged.

Each lake is near its own village center, making waterfront living in Reston a beautiful and convenient experience, with many opportunities for secluded and private waterfront housing, as well as a more urban environment closer to the village centers.

Waterfront Homes Communities in Reston VA

The homes off of Lake Audubon at the western tip, around Compass Point Lane, range in size, but the average is about 2,500 square feet.

These homes, although all different styles, typically have 3 to 5 bedrooms and 3-4 bathrooms.

True to the style of Reston architecture, these homes have very open floor plans with interesting angles and lots of natural light.

These homes all back to the lake, are surrounded by trees and nature trails, and most have their own private docks for boating, offering a more secluded experience.

These homes are only minutes from Walker Nature Park and South Lakes High School, both of which are under a mile away.

The homes at the northern tip of Lake Thoreau range in size, and have 3 to 4 bedrooms and 3-4 bathrooms.

These homes area located just off of Sunrise Valley Drive near Wiehle Avenue and the exit for the Dulles Toll Road.

In addition, they not only back to the water and are surrounded by trees, but are close to three of the major roads in Reston. This gives them the feeling of a vacation home with the convenience of city roads.

Northern Virginia Community College Reston Campus is only a mile away down the road and the new Lifetime Fitness Center and Tall Oaks Village Center are both under 2 miles away.

On the opposite side of the Dulles Toll Road to the north is Lake Anne, and Lake Anne Plaza.

Located just off Baron Cameron Avenue, the waterfront homes around the plaza offer both gorgeous scenery and convenient access to the center of the plaza.

Most homes around the plaza are townhomes with 2 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 4 bathrooms. These homes are largely brick & concrete with a full basement and rear patios with beautiful views of the lake.

Slightly less secluded than a single family home near one of the nature parks, these townhomes still offer private balconies overlooking the lake and are perfect for those who prefer a more urban setting.

Reston Virginia offers many different settings for waterfront living, and housing in general.

Whether you prefer to be closer to the center of villages and near the shops and activities, or hidden away on the edge of its many parks the area has something for everyone.

Some of these homes also have new construction in the area.

Conclusion

Reston offers a comprehensive living experience. The area has convenient access to main roads, lots of parks and trails to spend time in nature and urban centers strategically placed.

This creates a unique community in Fairfax County. In Northern VA it doesn’t get much better than living in Reston. I speak from experience.
